Jay Mallin is a Washington, DC-based photographer working for editorial clients (both news outlets and magazines), nonprofits (from really big ones to really small ones), and labor unions and related organizations. He specializes in collaborating with his subjects to make striking environmental portraits in situations where the "real" environment is a beige office with a computer screen — which sometimes seems to describe most of the modern world.
Jay also photographs for kids' books. (He's even written one, a middle-school biography of Al Sharpton for Scholastic. This means Jay gets regular royalty statements from the same company as JK Rowling. The actual royalties, however, probably differ — a lot!)
In his spare time, Jay does almost anything outdoors, with his friends and family: rock climb, bike, run, sail, ride, ski, snowboard, cross-country ski. Every winter he and
his sons wistfully discuss the idea of moving to a place where the snow is more reliable. So far, though, they've remained in Washington.
Jay Mallin Photos is a member of 1% Percent for the Planet, an alliance of companies that donate at least one percent of their annual net revenues to environmental organizations worldwide. Member businesses range from tiny surf shops to big companies like Patagonia, whose founder, Yvon Chouinard, created the group.
